The Australian BioResources Facility is accredited by AQIS as a Quarantine Approved Premise and can import mice into Australia from overseas and perform post arrival quarantine if required. Mice can also be imported on behalf of researchers from other accredited research establishments within Australia. Importing mice from other Australian facilities does not require AQIS oversight or an Import permit. Relevant AEC (Animal Ethics Committee) and IBC (Institutional BioSafety) approvals and MTA ( Material Transfer Agreements) must be organised before initiating the import process.
After arrival all mice are housed under strict quarantine for a minimum of 30 days during which they are closely monitored for signs of disease or ill health, and tested for pathogens. If housed under AQIS quarantine a release from quarantine must be obtained before mice can be moved to breeding rooms.
International imports take a minimum of 6-8 weeks for the mice to arrive, while local imports generally take about 2 weeks. Delays can occur if the sender does not have appropriate mice available.
