The soiled bedding from thousands of mouse cages is collected each week and sent away for recycling as compost while the mice are provided with a clean, sterile cage. The bedding used in the facility is either processed rice hulls (a by-product of rice harvesting) or recycled paper pellets. The nesting material given to the mice is made from shredded fine cardboard and this, once used is also sent for composting.

The facility also recycles paper, glass bottles, aluminum and plastics as part of a general waste-recycling programme.

A recycling programme for mouse transport containers is offered to Partner Institutes. On each delivery the facility van will collect transport shippers used in previous deliveries and return them to Australian BioResources for sterilization and re-use.
