The welfare of laboratory animals is regulated under the NSW Animal Research Act (1985) and the care and use of laboratory animals is monitored by local Animal Ethics Committees (AECs). The AEC responsible for overseeing the welfare of animals at the Australian BioResources facility is the Garvan & St. Vincents AEC. Australian BioResources also comes under the Garvan Institute's Research Accreditation and Suppliers Licence.

All animal husbandry procedures carried out at the Australian BioResources facility have been approved by the Garvan and St Vincents AEC. Animal welfare is monitored independently via inspections from the AEC and from the Department of Primary Industries Animal Welfare Branch.

Animal welfare is a major focus within Australian BioResources and monitoring procedures, the provision of environmental enrichment and staff training are constantly reviewed and assessed.

Regular reports on production and usage are provided to both the AEC and Department of Primary Industries.
