About ABR

Australian BioResources Pty Ltd is a state of the art facility for the breeding and holding of research mice, owned and operated by the Garvan Institute of Medical Research on behalf of the medical research community in Australia.

The facility provides capacity to house the rapidly increasing number of 'lines' or varieties of genetically modified mice that underpin progress in modern medical research. These colonies are critical for progress in research across all health priority areas, including cancer, mental illness, arthritis, asthma, heart disease, diabetes and obesity. ABR is NATA accredited under the ISO 17025 standard. Further information is available at Quality.

Mouse Lines

ABR currently holds over 800 different client lines of genetically modified mice, and ABR staff are specially trained in their breeding and care to ensure that animal welfare is optimised. A number of standard strains are available to support the diverse needs of the research community. All mice bred in the facility are Specific Pathogen Free, so they are free of diseases that may impact on animal welfare and experiment results.

Services

ABR offers a range of services including:

  • Import/Export of live mice and frozen embryos or sperm through our Quarantine Approved Premise
  • Rederivation of lines to SPF standards
  • CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing for customised mouse lines.
  • Cryopreservation and recovery of frozen lines
  • Surgical mouse models
All services are ordered and tracked through the Stuart animal management software and are accessible to researchers through StuartWeb.

Stuart Mouse Management

The facility also provides a comprehensive range of support services to ensure researchers can manage mouse colonies efficiently and can access new mouse lines in a timely manner.  This includes exceptional animal management software, called Stuart, which was developed not only to maintain mouse records, but to help run all aspects of the facility, including delivery schedules, compliance records and billing.

Technicians work on a virtual bench, data entry is minimised and all activity is recorded in real time. The StuartWEB platform provides researchers with unparalleled access to information about their breeding colonies, including genotypes from tissue collected at ABR and processed by the Garvan Molecular Genetics Mouse Genotyping Service.

Partner Benefits

Research institutes and universities can become ABR partners and access a number of benefits including a 15% discount on all prices, by committing to minimum use of ABR over a 1-2 year period.
